2011 Corgi Gift Exchange

We participated in the corgi gift exchange again this year. Our Secret Santa Paws were Kipper and his human Marie. They sent the boys a 10 pack of bully sticks from bestbullysticks.com

It's been tough trying to keep them from Bender. I put them in a stocking under the tree on Thursday and he kept pulling the stocking out and carrying it around the house.

You can't tell, but his snout is in his stocking.

Notice the head tilt. The only way to get Bender to look at the camera is to say "treats."

I'm at a loss this year on what I should get Bender. Bones is easy. Giant bag of tennis balls = 1 happy pup.

Bender is tricky. He doesn't really "play" like other dogs. Toys with stuffing end up de-stuffed. Rawhides hurt his tummy. He has an antler. So, what do I get him?

Any recommendations? Nothing with pieces that hang off as they will be ripped off. Nothing with stuffing. Preferably something tough that can be chewed on. Also made in USA is a bonus. Also under $10 is best, money is really tight this year.

I could always give him an empty box.

Hello Adventure Dog Blog followers! Once again I'll apologize for being a horrible blogger!

My last update was in May! Where to begin with the updates? This will be mostly non-Bender related. Sorry. Scroll down for Bender photos though!

Last you knew I was living in Idaho and teaching and the husfriend was sadly unemployed. After many long talks and tough decisions I resigned my teaching position.

Fast forward to October. The husfriend decided he wanted to go back to school to study Astronomy and Astrophysics and had been accepted to The University of Arizona and was waiting on acceptance to University of Texas at Austin. Where to go? We consulted a family friend (also from Michigan) well known in the astronomy field and he provided us with this analogy: "Tucson is like Houghton Michigan whereas Austin is like Ann Arbor." That settled it for us. We rented a 26' Penske truck and loaded it with all our possessions. A small lapse in judgement occurred at this point. We only have one car and decided to trailer it. At this point we asked, where will the dogs go? Obviously the only solutuion was on the bench seat in the cab with us.

Off we went on our adventure. 2 humans, 2 dogs, a 26' Penske truck and a trailer. What a long three day drive it was.

Fast forward past all the boring stuff. We are in Austin and sadly a bit lost. The husfriend was not accepted to UTAustin. I can't find a full time job. We're struggling, and it's tough.

Not sure what the future holds for us. Things in Austin may not last too long. We could move back with our parents in Michigan until we get back on our feet. Eventually we want to end up back in Boise.

As for the dogs they love it here. We have woods behind our apartment and they enjoy barking at the hawks and squirrels. There's a dog park they enjoy and they've been to a cage free doggie daycare which is great. Bones learned how to swim in the river and everyone on the trails thinks Bender is handsome.

Hopefully things turn around soon. Austin seems to be a great city and it's super doggie friendly.

Hello everyone in corgi blog land! I know it's been a while. Here are a few quick updates.

Bender:

Bender is doing well, although I think he has obsessive disorder. He spends HOURS sitting in the backyard staring at the fence. I think there's a cat on the other side. Sometimes he'll sit two feet away and stare. Other times his nose is smooshed against the fence. He even tried digging under the fence which resulted in a broken knuckle, gash on paw and $40 vet bill.

Bones:

Bones is his goofy self. Enjoying the warmer weather and spending time collecting tennis balls in the backyard. He's up to 8. He's also become my running buddy while I train for my 5k's. I swear the only time he can move in a straight line is when he is running.

Me:

I've officially not renewed my contract and will be jobless as of June 2! (I still get paid over the summer though.) Looking for teaching jobs in Idaho, Arizona, Texas and Michigan. The husfriend has applied to University of Arizona, University of Texas at Austin, and University of Michigan. Not sure where we're going or what we'll be doing but I'm sure the universe will guide us.

I ran my second 5k yesterday. I didn't run the whole time. :( I slacked on my training. Although I finished my first 5K at 35:10 and my second at 39:51, so not bad. Training for another next month. I want to run the whole time and finish in under 30 minutes.

I'm running the school play. This accounts for the lack of posts. My usual day looks something like this: School 8-3:15, After School Program 3:15-4, Play Practice 4:15-8, home by 8:30-9, sleep. Repeat M-T sometimes Friday. Our play is on the 25th, 27th and 31st. I love my play kids, but I'll be glad when it's over with. I'd like my life back.

I promise I'll get better with the posting when school is out. These last 3 weeks will be crazy, hopefully I'll have time to post on a more regular basis after that.

We're Healthy Omega Gourmet Dog Food Giveaway Winners!

I shot her an email saying I wanted any of them except salmon. (I have a life-threatening seafood allergy. Even the smell makes me horribly sick.)

To my surprise when the package arrived I received two bags! Lamb and Chicken. I thought we only got one! If I would have known I would have taken all three and donated the salmon to our local shelter.

We've only tried a little as treats but both Bender and Bones seem to approve so far!

We got the package last Monday, but it was Spring Break and I never got around to posting.

Hide n Go Seek

The husfriend and I recently picked up a box of Kirkland brand bones from Costco (made in the USA!). The dogs love them. We used to buy them for Bender and he would hide them all over the house.

He seems to remember his old ways and has taken to hiding them in couch cushions, under pillows on the bed, in the wires under hisfriend's computer desk and last night in my pile of clothes waiting to be washed.

I was getting ready for bed and couldn't figure out why Bender was so reluctant to join me on the bed. He's usually the first one in bed ready to claim his spot. I shrugged it off and went to bed without him.

"I'm not doing nothin." *innocent face*

"See Ma, I'm just seepin!"

Today I stayed home with a stomach bug, but figured I'd better not waste the day, so I decided to start some laundry. Bender became very protective of my clothes when I went to wash them. I figured there was a treat hidden somewhere in them, and sure enough I found a bone. After I found it he had to sulk and eat it.

"You don't see nothin Ma!"

*sulk*"But I hides it soo good."

He's still not happy that I destroyed his hiding place.

What about your dogs? Bones isn't one to hide a treat. If he sees it, it's nom time. Bender hides treats half the time and eats them right away the other half (probably so Bones won't get them.) What about your dog? Are there any other treat hiders out there in blog land? Where is your dog's favorite treat hiding place?

I realized on Monday that as of Sunday 2/13 I've had this blog 1 year. 65 posts in the first year. Not bad, but not so great either.

I'm already slacking on Wordless Wednesday and keeping up with the blog. I'll try to keep up as much as I can.

Valentine's Day was very low key. I gave each dog a bone. They enjoyed it.

Thanks to Kelly over at Corgi Butts for point the way to Geri and Sidney over at My Corgi. "last August Sidney was diagnosed with hip dysplasia, and he underwent FHO surgery in order to give him mobility and alleviate some of the pain." Now they give away bandanas and in exchange ask for a donation of $8 for Sidney's fund.

We got our bandanas in the mail today. They're great! I think I may donate some more and get bandanas for all the dogs in my family. If you're interested in one, send Geri a message on My Corgi!

I got the dogs one of those giant rawhides (from Target) for Christmas. (Notice it's as long as Bender.) He hogs it and doesn't share well with Bones. Usually it ends up in his crate with him.

Resolutions for 2011

I'll be the first to admit I'm horrible at keeping up the blog. Between teaching (and all that goes with it), working a second job, and trying to keep the house together updating the blog is the last thing I want to do.

But I have an adorable corgi lying by my side and I promised him this year I'd be better. Maybe this year I'll get Peabody Snarflenubbins treats on Etsy. (If we pack up and move to Austin or Tucson that may become my only income. More on that later.)

Here are my non-blog related resolutions:

1. Run a 5K. I started the couch to 5k program this week. I've never been a runner, but I've always wanted to complete a 5k. I've decided I don’t need to place I just want to run the entire time and finish the race!

2. Goal weight – 118-120lbs. I have this number in my head that makes me happy. I'm 130 right now, and that's not bad at all, but I've noticed since I started teaching in August of 2009 I've gained weight and it hasn't come off. I'd be happy if I became more lean and toned even if I didn't meet my "happy weight." I have a workout calendar on the wall in the bathroom and a pair of shorts that are a little too small hanging up as motivation.

3. Eat more veggies/healthier meals. We're big fans of meat around here. Usually chicken sometimes beef. We're trying to do vegetarian meals at least 2-3 times a week. I've found some great weight watchers meals and we're doing well so far!

4. Less snacking/ healthier snacks. I'm a bored snacker. Nothing to do? Snack. And usually it's not a good snack. It's chips, candy, etc. I'm trying really hard to eat more fruits as snack. I'm not cutting out the chocolate, but I'm definitely moderating it. This also includes lowering the amount of pop I consume. Casey and I are down to sharing 1 12oz can a day. Already improved, but I want to cut it out entirely.

5. (Once it warms up) Walk Bender and Bones DAILY! We're really bad since we have a nice big fenced in yard. We let the dogs outside and call it good. I really want to start walking them every day. 1. It's good exercise for them, and Bender has porked up a bit. 2. It helped immensely with keeping their nails trimmed. 3. It was a great way to work on obedience.

6. Be more money aware. I'm a horrible spender. I'll be the first to admit it. The red and white clearance stickers at Target are like a drug to me. "But it's such a great deal!" Same thing at my second job. I buy far too many clothes. I've set up a savings account and any time I feel the urge to buy anything that is a non-necessity I will instead not buy the item and deposit the same amount into the savings account.

Also this year, I'm going to take a risk. I've decided not to renew my contract at my school. I don't have another job lined up right now, but I'm decided on not staying. The school is a "sinking ship" and I need to get out before I'm sucked down with it. Casey and I have talked and we don't have a house payment, we don't have family or friends here, we really have no ties to Twin Falls so we're going to pack it up and move. We're looking at Tucson - because he was accepted to the Astronomy program at UofA, or Austin - we have friends there and it's a growing city. Job wise, I'll look for a teaching job, but if none is to be found, I can transfer with my retail job, I've worked in food service before, and if I can I'll set up the etsy shop and sell the dog treats.

I think 2011 has many big changes in store for us. I'm nervous and excited and ready to take it all on!

I'll get pictures posted when I find my camera. I think I'm going to start wordless wednesday and try to keep it up all year.

Also, this is horrible and I apologize, I have my holiday cards addressed and ready to be sent. Yup still haven't sent them. So you will get it, it just may not be until mid-January. :) Better late than never right?

Secret Santa Paws by Bender

Our secret Santa Paws was... WILSON (and his mom Chelsea) from A Dashing Dachshund!

They were very nice with the presents!

Mommy cut open the package and Bones and I used teamwork to get the goodies! He held the bag while I stuck my head inside.

I smells good stuffs!

Dad said we had to read the card first. Said something about it being the proper way to open a gift. Psshhh.

Done now. Wants presents!

Bones picked his favorite and went to his dog cave. (Note from Rachel: He woke me up at 4am squeaking the skineez right under where I lay in bed. He really loves it!)

Doggie Torture

Otherwise known as my attempt at a Holiday card.

I'll just start by saying I failed.

I found antlers at the Target $1 spot, so I brought them home, very excited with my find.

My first attempt (the picture at the bottom) was taken in the house. Not good enough. I decided I needed Holiday pizazz!

So, I ushered the dogs into the snow covered backyard and put the antlers on both of them.

Then everything fell apart.

Bones refused to move, not even his head. He was staring at the ground completely unable to move. (He does this when you put any article of clothing on him. He freezes and thinks he is unable to move.)

Much like Allie's dog from Hyperbole and a Half.
(we've put the booties on Bones and ended up with the same result.)

Bender's slid down his head and rested on his neck. His head isn't built to support a headband, it's the ears. He then managed to get them off at which point I had a tug of war with him trying to get him to release the antlers.

In summary, no Holiday card. At least, not yet.

Let Me In!

Today we got dumped on with more snow. No big deal, except that we have a fairly good sized parking lot at our 4-plex and we had to shovel all of it. I let the dogs out into the backyard and Casey and I got started on the parking lot.

About a half hour in, I came into the house and was greeted by this.

"Ma! I'm f-f-f-freezing!"

Nose smooshed onto the glass and all.

Bones joined shortly after. I think he enjoyed the snow more.

First Snowfall

Last night, Casey and I went out on a date for our 5 year anniversary. 5 years ago to the very day, we went and say Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire for our first date. It was cold and snowing in big puffy flakes. Last night, we went and saw Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows. It was cold and snowing in big puffy flakes.

Big puffy flakes that accumulated and covered the entire backyard by this morning.

"Hey Mikey! I think he likes it!"

"What snow on my nose? Oh that? I like it there."

First potty break of the morning. "Ma, its cold on our feets!"

I went to Target today and got more clearance costumes for the dogs. They can now dress as a Lobster, a Banana, A newspaper reporter, a King, The Headless Horseman's steed, and A Spartan's Chariot. I WILL NOT buy costumes next year! (just keep repeating that to yourself Rachel...)

I went to Hot Topic and got myself two Lady Gaga costumes and a Snow White costume at 75% off. Do I need them? No. But 75% off and I already have costumes for next year!

Casey and I made my friend Erin dress up and come out with us for Halloween. Casey and I dressed up as Eric Northman and Sookie Stackhouse from TrueBlood. This scene explains Casey's costume - "Is there blood in my hair?" WARNING very graphic content! If you're squeamish I suggest you pass on the video!

We went to BDubs, and two smaller local bars. I found $10. According to Erin's friend Katie, "It's Karma's way of saying 'thanks for being DD!'"

Just bought the dogs a new Halloween Costume. Target has all costumes 15% off right now!

Neither is too excited about wearing it. They thought it was a stuffed toy and tried to rip the gladiator off the costume.

Not sure how long they'll end up wearing the costume, but I'll still give it a try.

Treats!

I'm sill working on Peabody Snarflenubbins and Co. I swear! I really am! If you don't understand what that sentence means (for my newer readers) look here for background info and here for links to reviews from my wonderful taste testers!

I'm hoping by next week to really have the shop up and running. I'm even going to give my readers a discount for being so patient. Summer just went by so quickly and schools already been in for a month! I'm trying to get into the swing of writing lesson plans and grading papers, and working two jobs, and having a home life. I'm hoping by next week I can have a schedule worked out with Wednesday being my designated baking night.

ANYWAY! I made some Barkin' Banana Biscotti yesterday so I could finally send them to my paws it forward people. (These were a Gibson Favorite! If you haven't seen the video, you should watch it!) I am SO sorry that it's taken so long!

I modified the recipe and included peanut butter and instead of long rods I made them into big bones.

I made all three sizes, and the little ones I turned into peanut butter sandwiches!

I decided to make them a little differently because I picked up this three pack of dog bone cookie cutters from PetSmart. They were $7.99 - a little more than I'd like to have spent, but I suppose the Martha Stewart brand is pricey, and I'm a sucker for Martha! The web page even offers some recipes! I think I'll have to try those out as well!

They got the Bender and Bones seal of approval so I hope Dexter and Bronwyn, Dylan, and Rhiannon enjoy them!

Reverse Sneezing

Poor Bender. He had a pretty long bout of reverse sneezing tonight.

"Ma, makes it stop! I don't yike it!"

I remember the first time he did this we were on a walk. I didn't know what to make of it. I thought he inhaled a bug or a weed or was possibly getting ready to hack up a lung.

Usually I don't sit there and tape it. Usually when this happens I'm lying on the floor with him trying to calm and reassure him.

Bender seems to hate his right back leg. He spins and spins and spins and tries to gnaw on it.

He usually does this when he's excited or when there's a lot going on in the house.

Once he "catches" his leg he gnaws on it until it is soaked.

"I hates you leg. I hates you so bad I'mma get you!"

Lately when we leave the house we've had to lock the dogs in their crates.

Bones has issues with separation and we've come home to discover that he's put together entire outfits on the floor. Actually it's pretty amazing! He'll get a shoe for each foot (usually one of mine and one of Casey's), he'll have a shirt and usually a towel instead of pants. He's also destroyed my $90 slippers and chewed on Casey's.

So into the crates they go.

BUT, Bender doesn't like being locked up. Bender wants to do what he wants to do when he wants to do it. So if we tell him "Bender, crate." He'll roll on his back and go limp noodle.

"I's cute, right? No crate for me?"

You may want to turn the volume down. I didn't realize how annoying my voice was.

We try to ask him forcefully, we try to bribe with treats (I know, we're bad), we usually have to resort to picking up a 35lb Corgi brick.

Do any other Corgi's out there do this? I'm thinking it's time he and I go to obedience classes.

Corgi Butts Calendar - I'm a Finalist!

Kelly over at Corgi Butts is making a Corgi Calendar! Friggin sweet!

Kelly has done an amazing job of whittling down over 300 pictures submitted to her and has narrowed them down to only 30! AND... Bender was picked as one of the finalists to be voted on! We're both very excited!

I was amazed Bender made the cut. 300 pictures! That's a lot of corgi adorable-ness to sort. (I think it'd be a fun job. Who doesn't love an adorable Corgi mug?)

The other finalists this year are AMAZING! I think I need to step it up for next year. I have to get a better camera and try to catch Bender in more adorable poses. It's very difficult. He has a serious hatred for all things camera related. The picture I submitted was him trying to be cute so I'd let him stay in the front yard, something he doesn't get to do very often.

Bender and I received a great package from Kelly and Gibson over at Corgi Butts for Paws it Forward.

We got the box last Tuesday but it was the first day of school and I've been too busy to post until now!

"Is that for ME!? I LOVE presents!"

Bender was jazzed up as soon as he saw the box. I let him help unpack his presents. He went straight for the tissue paper and took off into the living room with it.

"Ohmigosh! PAPER! How did they know!? I love to shred paper! This is the best present EVAR!"

I had to corner him, take it away and explain that the tissue wasn't part of his present. I don't think he cared, he just wanted the paper.

"Grrr. Bark. Grrr. (tearing noises) This is AWESOME!"

We got the box unpacked and got to see all his great presents!

Bender's Loot

Bender got a Kong Wubba, a bully stick, a sausage stick, some amazing smelling pumpkin treats, and some fruitables. And I got a Corgi Butts "I Kiss My Corgi on the Lips" magnet! I LOVE it!

Bender isn't too excited about the fact that I'm making him share the treats with Bones. He's been guarding the Kong with his life as well.

In our house we don't celebrate dog birthdays. Not that I wouldn't love to, it's just that we don't know when either of the dogs were born.

Instead we celebrate Happy "We decided to dog-sit you and you never left" Day for Bender, and for Bones we celebrate Happy "I found you sitting in the street and you jumped into my car" Day.

We're all for non-traditional holidays here.

2 years ago on August 14 we brought Bender home so we could dog-sit him. The owner didn't want him back and I was already in love with him. So it came to be that I found the Corgi love of my life.

To celebrate I made him the doggie cake that Bri made Sammy over at The Adventures of Sammy. She was right, Carob powder was pretty hard to find. I had to go to 4 different stores and I finally found it in the all-natural bulk section at Fred Meyer.

I thought the slices looked a little big, so they got to share one slice.

The cake was a huge hit. Both dogs sat with me in the kitchen while I cooked. When I began frosting the cake they began drooling. When they actually got to eat it - it didn't last more than 20 seconds. I'm not sure they really even tasted it.

While moving I uncovered the dog's Halloween costumes. Bones was the lobster last year, but I decided to try the costume on Bender. I love my Corgi lobster!

We've Moved!

It seems as though I post a few entries and then disappear for a few weeks. Summer just seems to be a very busy time in our house.

After we returned from our 3 week cross-country trip to Michigan we packed up our house and moved! We moved a whopping 4 blocks from our old house. The new place was too good to pass up. Brand new, built this year. Came with a washer and dryer, stove, dishwasher, tons of storage/closet space and best of all AC! The rent was less as well.

Bender wasn't fond of moving. He spent the first few day in our new place here.

Shhh. I'm hidings. You can't sees me!

Yup, that's Bender hiding in the bathroom closet. He decided that was his spot and we couldn't store anything there. If we asked "Where's Bender?" 9 times out of 10 the answer would be "In the bathroom closet."

After he became adjusted to the new living situation he ventured into the bedroom.

I needs to guard my daddy when he sleeps! (Casey is somewhere under that pile of blankets and pillows.)

Once the boxes in the living room were unpacked he became adventurous and would stare out into our small backyard.

From there he decided he would patrol outside along the fence, making sure to bark at the kitties that live next door.

I sees stuffs that needs to be barked at!

Finally after a week he's back to his normal playful Bender self.

Must destroy soccer ball! GRRR!

As I write this I have a happily adjusted corgi sleeping on my feet. I think he's grown to like his new home.

Aaaaand We're Back!

First things first, Kelly and Gibson, Betty and Koda, and Karen and Butterball thank you so much for the wonderful treat reviews! I really hope you enjoyed your snacks. I hope to have the shop up and running within the next week or so.

Now to explain where we disappeared to the past two weeks. We went from Idaho to Utah, to Wyoming, to Nebraska, to Iowa, to Illinois, to Indiana, and Michigan. We then traveled back through Indiana, Illinois, and Iowa, but then we ventured to South Dakota, Wyoming, Montana, and arrived back in Idaho. If you counted, that's 10 states in just over 2 weeks! Whew!

Now why would we make a crazy trip like that you ask? One of my best friends from high school got married. You may ask yourself, "Why would they drive over 2000 miles with two dogs?" Well we knew we wanted to spend some time with our families in Michigan and it's just too pricey to board the dogs for that long. Plus Bender IS an adventure dog, and this sure was one long adventure!

We did a bunch of touristy stuff along the way. We stopped by The Henry Ford in Detroit, "The Future Birthplace of Captain James T. Kirk" in Riverside Iowa, The Danish Windmill in Elk Horn Iowa, Wall Drug in South Dakota, The Geographic Center of the Country in South Dakota, The Aladdin Tipple in Wyoming, and Devils Tower in Wyoming! We also stopped by Western Michigan University to walk the dogs around campus.

Bender did surprisingly well in the car this trip. He only panted the first day, after that he sat like a lead brick on our laps. By the end he was even sleeping in the car! Yes, the only way Bender will sit in the car is if he can sit in the front seat on the passenger's lap. Let me tell you, 4 days in a car with a 35lb corgi on your lap isn't as fun as it may sound.

Peabody Snarflenubbins & Co.

This is a post for my taste testers, Gibson, Butterball, Koda, and Stanley. Your treats were shipped today! Expect them within 2-3 days (I'd say Tuesday due to the holiday weekend.)

They should stay fresh, you'll have to let me know. (It's all new to me!)

The treats you'll receive are in the only packaging I could find in my small town. Yup, dollar store brown paper bags. I'm looking into ordering tin tie bags with windows so you can see the treats and they'll stay nice and fresh.

Also, you have the quickest label C could whip up for me. The final label will look like this:

I'm shopping the labels around to printers to find out how much it will cost to print them up. I'm also having C make ingredient labels. (If you want to know what went into your treats, shoot me an email!)

You should be receiving a mix of Oatmeal Crunchies, Peanut Butter Bones, Beef 'n Barley Bones, Bark'n Banana Biscotti, Snickerpoodles, Apple Snackums, and Apple and Sweet Potato Snackums. (I sent enough so that if you like them you can share with your friends, although I know how difficult that can be fore little corgis!)

Also, unfortunately one of you won't get the Apple and Sweet Potato Snackums. I made the boxes up in our local Target parking lot while sitting in my front seat, and after I sealed all the boxes I discovered the lone bag of treats. I didn't want to rip open all the boxes, I'm sorry!

About a month ago I mentioned that I had wanted to start a homemade dog treat shop on Etsy. Well I've finally (and very slowly) started getting to work on Peabody Snarflenubbins & Co. (name still a work in progress. )

Today I started making treats, I'll finish up tomorrow after I've gone grocery shopping. What I need are four legged friends to taste test!

The treats available for testing will be some mixture of peanut butter bones, oatmeal crunchies, banana biscotti, beef barley bones, snickerpoodles, and apple/sweet potato biscuits.

If you think your four legged friends would find any of those yummy shoot me an email at rachel.trembley@gmail.com. Please include your name (and dog's name!) and your address. (Also include if your dog has food allergies that way I can avoid sending anything that would upset their tummies!) I'm hoping to ship them out by Friday afternoon.

All I ask in return is that you send feedback either as a blog post or a comment on what your four legged friends (and you) thought. I'd appreciate honesty!

Product Review: FURminator deShedding Shampoo and Solution

Sunday mornings I like to go to Target to check out the new sales and do my shopping before the store gets busy.

This morning I discovered FURminator deShedding Shampoo and deShedding Solution on clearance for $6.48 each down from the original price of $13 a bottle.

I know our vet and my mom's neighbor who is a groomer recommend them, also I'm a sucker for clearance and for my dogs so I picked up a bottle of each.

I decided when I got home that it was bath time as both dogs were starting to smell like stinky feet.

We've started giving them a bath at the same time - it's just easier that way. Bones will hop in the tub without being told, Bender...is a different story.

We started with the FURminator deShedding Shampoo. First observation - it's blue, VERY VERY bright blue. Also, it smells amazing! Coconut - very summery. It lathers well, although we usually use a little more on Bender due to his thick coat. The bottle says let it sit 5-10 minutes, I think we made it 3 before Bender tried to leap from the tub. I don't know any Corgi that is willing to sit with shampoo on them for 10 minutes, but I don't think our 3 minutes will affect the outcome. It rinsed off cleanly, that's a big plus - I hate shampoos that make the dogs feel slimy even after it's washed off.

After we finished rinsing the shampoo off we moved on to the FURminator deShedding Solution. C commented that he wanted to skip it with Bender as he was already restless and disgruntled at having been tossed in the tub. I told him Bender was already wet, he'd be fine a few more minutes. This solution had the consistency of a conditioner and it had a fresh smell. I felt we had to use more than we should because it didn't spread as well as the shampoo. The bottle said to let the solution sit for 5 minutes, again I think we only made it 3. I felt that the solution took longer to rinse off than the shampoo.

Overall I'd say if you can find it on clearance great, but I'm not sure I'd spend $13 for each bottle. The dogs do smell great (so do my hands!), we'll have to wait and see how effective it is on shedding.

Evening Walk

We've been taking walks every evening, nothing fancy just little walks around our neighborhood. We're working on "heel" "sit" and "leave it."

"Leave it" definitely seems to be the most difficult for Bender. It's amazing the strength a little Corgi can have when he wants to see another dog, smell some grass, or pee on a telephone pole. I feel like by now he should know "leave it" but he chooses to ignore it.

Bones is much better at "sit" than his older brother. Definitely the more obedient of the two.

Long Overdue

Hello everyone in Blog land! We are still alive and well over here at the Adventure Dog Blog. Things just got a little hectic the last month.

School ended which is always a chaotic time, final exams, report cards, meetings, packing up my classroom. On top of that one of our seniors passed away the day before graduation, which made the week even more difficult than it should have been.

A few days after school let out C and I flew back to Michigan for my father's and his mother's 50th Birthdays. Spent almost a week in MI, there are things I miss, but Michigan can keep the humidity, mosquitoes, and the allergens that make me feel like death. While we were there the boys got to stay at the Vet's. Our Vet is amazing and Bones loves it there, Bender isn't so thrilled being left anywhere without us for an extended time.

I can't believe school has already been out for a month! How time flies. I'm working a part time job to try and save up some money because they're cutting my pay this coming year. I'm still planning on starting Peabody Snarflenubbins & Co. I think I'll get baking tomorrow since I have to work today.

Now the reason you're all here some corgi! Yesterday C and I took the boys down to Centennial Park. When I say down I truly mean "down" as we live along the Snake River Canyon which is 500 feet deep and a quarter mile wide. It truly is one of the prettiest things about this town, too bad it's obscured by strip malls and traffic.

Walked around the park, laid in the shade, checked out the water - which Bender hates! All in all great family time at the park!

Perrine Bridge which leads into Twin Falls. Perrine Bridge is the only man-made structure in the United States where BASE jumping is allowed year-round without a permit.

I've begun to realize a few things the past couple of days.

As I reach the end of my first year of teaching, I've begun to realize how much I truly enjoy teaching. I know I've chosen the right career and I couldn't be happier. Also, I've begun to realize no matter how stressful my job can be, no matter how frustrated I am when I arrive home after a hard day, Bender is there to calm me.

So I've decided that in my time off this summer, aside from working on lesson plans and professional development, I'm going to start an ETSY shop for dog treats. I've already posted two recipes on here and I have a folder full of many others. I think that people might enjoy spoiling their furry friends with homemade treats. I know I do.

We've been kicking around names and trying to think of logos for our shop. C whipped up the logo for me yesterday using illustrator (pretty good for his first try!) Right now, this is what we have:

Bender's full name is "Duke" Bender Peabody Snarflenubbins. The Co. refers to Bones, the other loyal taste tester, as well as myself - the human making the food, but of course the Duke runs the show. I like the monocle.

Do you like the name? Do you have other suggestions? Possibly a subtitle? Other logo ideas? (Remember this is a work in progress!) We'll here's your chance to be heard!

This afternoon, shortly after I got home from work, I had to run back out to my car. I left the dogs at the door with a firm "stay" and walked out. Not five steps out the door I heard the distinctive click of nails on cement. I turned around and there was Bender. He managed to sneak out the door before it clicked shut.

He doesn't get to sit in the front yard often because it's not fully fenced in. I had C grab me his leash and I tied him to the fence. He seemed to enjoy lying in the dandelions.

A Little Late by Bender

I'm a little late in posting about date night. Sorry for the delay but daddy's Grand-paw got real sick and he passed away on Monday. So mommy and daddy have been really busy lately. Daddy is in Michigan for the funeral, I miss him lots.

On a happier note date night was wonderful!

This is how I prepared.

Getting ready is tiring business!

I met up with the beautiful Dott. She was radiant in her black and red dress, she took my breath away. I tried to match as best as I could, mom helped me. Mom said I was handsome. Dott and I met up with BG and Lorenza. I can't even begin to describe date night! Limos, a castle, amazing food, great music, and the most ravishing date. I think we'll definitely have to do it again!

While I was getting ready so were mom and dad. Mom had to chaperone Prom. She put a lot of work into decorating and she says she thinks the kids had a lot of fun. She looked really pretty. Black and red must be popular colors!

Yesterday was another beautiful day. I came home from school to find all the boys (C, Bender, and Bones) out in the yard. After I swapped my work clothes for some shorts I went outside to join them.

Little Helper

Bender is a wonderful "helper."

Today we purchased a new dining set, got a great deal at Target. C and I were building the tabletop and Bender decided he needed to help. "Help" in Bender-speak means walk around, sniff things, and finally sit in my lap - impeding my ability to do anything.

"Hmmm. What is daddy doing?"

"I helping!" (looks like the screwdriver is in his mouth!)

The finished product looks great! We're excited we finally have somewhere to sit and eat together. Bender isn't as excited as his little "man cave" is now gone and his bed is under the new table.

Easter: By Bender

My mommy hasn't had time to update lately.

Last Saturday was her 25th birthday, she spent it curled up on the couch with me and Bones. She said it was perfect. Daddy made her a cake that looks like the one Hagrid makes Harry in the first Harry Potter movie. She loved it, she even shared a little piece with me and Bones! She's a real nice mommy!

This week mom had something called "parent teacher conferences". I don't know what that means, maybe mom has to teach parents too? All I know is that she gets home really late and I don't like it.

Today is something called Easter. I don't know what that means but mom said that some big bunny came and brought me and Bones presents and treats. I don't know what a bunny is but I like him if he brings me stuff!

Check out my loot! Yes MY loot. It's all mine, Bones only gets some because mommy makes me share.

Nature's Recipe Teeth & Breath Lamb Meal & Rice Treats are nommy! They don't have any beef, corn or wheat. These ones are supposed to be good for my breath which mommy says I need.

Mom says the boomerang should be good in helping me learn how to fetch. I got to play with it today and I love it, but mom took it away and said it's an outside only toy.

I got a whole bunch of new Toyshoppe toys! See how excited I am? Mom likes them because it takes me forever to destroy them. I got a squeaky giraffe and hedgehog, and two different bones one of them you can put treats in!

Bath Time

Today was bath day for both dogs. Bender had begun to smell like a hamster cage. He's also having a bout of icky tummy so his bottom needed a washing anyway.

"What's that you say mom? Bath? I dislike that word."

I'm currently on Spring Break and decided to catch up on some tv viewing. C and I watched almost all of Bones season one. When we finished the last disk, I looked up at the clock last night and realized it was 3a.m.

Usually I'm in bed with Bender by 11, he did not like that I was up so late. So last night at about 12:30 he decided to commandeer his brother's cage and tuck himself in.

After The Park

We took the boys to the park yesterday. It was beautiful out! 60 degrees, sunny, not a cloud in the sky.

We got home and Bender proceeded to lie on the floor superman style. So adorable.

I think tomorrow is bath day for one little stinky dog. I'll try to get some pictures.

Herding?

Bender isn't one to play fetch or chase toys. He'll tug on a rope if you hold it, but that's about it.

We were at Target the other day and they had a power outage. Odd, but nothing that bothered us. We went about our shopping when the lights came on and got into line to check out. Since the registers had to re-boot, customer service came around and handed out "Sorry for the inconvenience here's $3 off" coupons. We used this coupon to buy Bender a really large ball.

We gave Bender the ball when we got home that night, but it was really windy and all it did was scare him. Today we gave it another try, and he loved it! I've never seen him go after a toy so enthusiastically. He chased it all around the yard, barked at it, got it stuck under the deck multiple times, and pushed it against the fence so hard he got a hole in it. We patched it up with duct tape, not sure how long it'll hold. I see many more of these giant balls in our future this summer.

Peanut Butter-Honey Roll Ups

Bender promised I would share another treat recipe. This is more time consuming than the last recipe I posted in my Sunday=Baking post, but the dogs seem to enjoy the finished product just as much. I got this recipe from Jen over at All-Natural-Dog-Treat. She made treats for her dog Baggins, who sadly passed about a month ago.

Recipe for Peanut Butter-Honey Roll Ups (modified from Jen's website)

*Note this recipe does take time to complete. You must have time to freeze finished dough!

For the Filling

1/2 c - Oatmeal, powdered (crush it up in the food processor)

2 tbsp - honey

1 tbsp - peanut butter (chunky or creamy is fine, just make sure it's organic!)

2 tbsp - Flax seeds, optional

1 egg white

For the Filling:
Use food processor to turn the oats into powder. Basically you’re making oat flour for the filling. Sift, then measure out ¼ c. of the most finely powdered oats.

Dump this back in the food processor and add peanut butter, honey and egg white. Blend until thoroughly mixed. Add flax seeds then pulse a couple of times to mix but keep mostly whole (mix by hand if you prefer, I'm just lazy).

Scrape out as much as possible into small bowl and set aside. Don't bother to clean out the food processor, you'll be using most of the same ingredients in the next step anyway.

Dough Ingredients:

1.5 c - whole wheat flour

1/2 c - all purpose flour

1/2 c - dry oatmeal

1/2 c - applesauce (puree a small apple as a substitute)

1/4 c - milk

1/4 c - peanut butter

2 tbsp - honey

1 egg + 1 yolk (XL)

For the Dough: Dump applesauce, milk, egg yolk, peanut butter, honey, and oats in food processor and pulse a few times.

Ingredients should be well combined, the oats looking about a quarter of their usual size. Scrape this out into the larger (1.5qt) bowl then add all purpose and whole wheat flour. Mix thoroughly to form a stiff dough. If dough is too dry to stick together, add 1tbsp of water at a time (do not exceed 4tbsp) until moist enough to stick. Knead for about 5 minutes then let dough rest for 10 minutes.

*Note:* Jen prefers to chop up a small apple rather than using applesauce. This leaving small chunks to give the dough more texture. I would have to agree with her.

To Make the Roll Ups:
Roll out dough between two sheets of wax or parchment paper, 1/4" to 1/2" thick, forming a rectangular shape about 8" wide, length will vary depending on thickness. Slightly taper both long ends. Now, get out the filling and evenly coat the whole top of the dough, avoiding the flattened edges. (I added a little extra honey and peanut butter for good measure!)
CAREFULLY roll up the dough tightly enough to trap the filling inside (don't let it squeeze out the ends) starting from one flattened edge to the other. (If the end won't stay put, moisten the tapered edge a bit so it will stick.) Once rolled up, wrap the wax or parchment paper around the tube then put it in a plastic bag or wrap it with plastic wrap, and put it in the freezer until firm enough to cut easily (usually 2-3 hours).

Even It Out

If your roll is uneven, you can even it out after chilling by rolling it with your hands against a flat surface.

You can also reduce the thickness in the same way, though I'd do this after chilling one hour then return the roll to the freezer. Using a slight sawing motion, cut slices 1/4" to 1/2" thick.

Baking

Bake on ungreased cookie sheet at 350 degrees (325 degrees if using dark cookie sheet), top rack for 30-45 minutes or until tops are slightly golden and bottoms are lightly browned. If you like, turn them for the last 10 minutes baking time so that the filling on the top browns and makes the swirl pattern more obvious. Let cool and then you can feed a healthy,delicious and PRETTY snack to your canine companion. Makes about 28 cookies, 2" wide, 1/2" thickness. (Rachel Note - again, with fresh treats I refrigerate them since they don't have preservatives.)

*Note:* But, they don't have to be roll-ups.

You could also roll out the dough to 1/4" thickness, cut into equal halves, coat the top of one half with the filling, top with second half of dough then cut into squares or strips. That would make more of a peanut butter dog treat sandwich.

See, I'm official. I get a badge and all!

Mom is jealous because she never wins anything, and this is my first contest and I won! They're real nice over there at Corgi Country. They gave us a great shout-out and Gimli wrote a very nice entry mentioning us. They have so many dogs! Dad won't let mom have more than 2, but mom says I give enough love for 2 dogs anyway.

I also want to say "hi" to Betty and Koda! They're so nice and always leave comments that make my mom smile.

Tomorrow mom said she's making more treats! I'll get her to post the recipe for all my doggie friends. Mommy treats are the best!

Licks and Love - Bender

Begging

Today I took away Bender's rope. He had pretty much destroyed it, but since I was working on homework I didn't want to get up to throw it away.

He watched me put it on the coffee table and then spent 10 minutes begging for it until I finally threw it away. I'll admit, I'm a sucker for those beautiful brown-gold eyes and usually end up giving in to him.

Sleepy Sunday

I'm usually up early on the weekends, residual effects of a teaching job. C will sleep in until 1pm if he's allowed. Sunday mornings I can usually find Bender lying on my pillows snuggled up next to C. We're not fans of him being on the pillows, but how could I say no to that face?

Studying

Bender dislikes anything that takes my attention away from him. This seems to be especially true with books. If I have a book he'll find a way to wedge himself between me and it, or flip it closed, or lie on it.

I'm taking an astronomy class and the homework usually takes quite some time to complete. He gets frustrated with this and finds ways to delay it even further.

This past summer we picked up a 35mm on Craigslist. C took these shots of Bender. I really enjoy them.

I love the look on his face here. "WTF are those? They don't look like noms."

No new photos of Bender buddy, camera is on the fritz. I'll try to get some new pics up this weekend, and possibly another treat recipe.

Sunday = Baking

Usually on Sundays I find myself writing lesson plans, grading papers, catching up on homework for my class, etc., but on the rare occasion that I am caught up on my work, I like to bake on Sunday.

Today C reminded me that I had peeled some bananas and left them in the fridge. I decided to make chocolate chip banana bread for the humans. After I had finished this I still had a lot of leftover banana. I looked down at the Corgi sitting by my feet, staring at me, begging me to make him some nommy treats.

I dug out a recipe I had for peanut butter dog treats and modified it to include banana.

Bender's Peanut Butter Banana Treats

1 1/2 cups whole wheat flour

1 1/2 cups white flour

1/2 cup peanut butter (all-natural or organic)

1/2 cup mashed banana

1/2 - 3/4 cup water

2 tablespoons oil

Preheat the oven to 350 F. Combine oil, peanut butter, banana and water. Mix flour together in a separate bowl, and add flour, one cup at a time, forming a dough. Knead dough into firm ball and roll to 1/4 inch thickness. (I've found you need to add a little extra water)

Use cookie cutter or cut into desired shapes. Place on an ungreased cookie sheet. Bake at 350 F for 20 minutes (longer if you desire crunchier treats). I recommend rotating the trays half way through. Makes 2+ dozen cookies. (Note: If you wish to leave the banana out and make plain peanut butter treats, increase water to 1 cup. You can also add a sprinkling of flax seeds. Finally, I refrigerate mine so they last longer.)

Yogurt

We usually mix in a spoonful of yogurt with the boys dinner. Each time we reach the end of the container I let Bender lick it clean. I love watching him try to fit his entire face in the container.

Hoping the weather clears up, I want to take the boys on a walk by the canyon.

Sneaky Thief

The dogs and I have a routine when I come home from teaching. They meet me at the door, jump on me, run around, etc. This is followed by Bender sticking his head in my bag until I put it on the ground for him to inspect. This has become so routine that I think nothing of dropping my bag on the ground while Bender rummages around in it and walking away.

Usually when he's finished with his inspection he'll come and find me to give me kisses. Today he did not. After a few minutes I grew suspicious. I looked around and discovered him in his "cave" - which is really just his doggie pillow hidden under the plant table. It looked like he was playing with his squeaky yellow ball. And then I noticed the corgi "I'm not doing anything wrong" look.

Upon closer inspection what I thought was his yellow ball was actually the pear that I had left in my bag. The little sneaker had taken the pear and begun to eat it as quickly as he could.

MMM... this is yummy!

Ok, I'll eat it outside.

I ended up taking it outside and breaking it apart for both my boys to share. It didn't last long. Then I thought about it, are pears ok for the boys to eat? So I Googled "Are pears bad for dogs?" I found this:

"Pears are an excellent source of water-soluble fiber, including pectin, which makes them useful in toning the intestines. Fresh pears contain potassium which is necessary for maintaining heartbeat, muscle contraction, nerve transmission, and carbohydrate metabolism. Pears also contain Vitamin C. An important antioxidant, Vitamin C is essential for helping prevent free radical damage. Because of the extra added fiber and pectin, you want to make sure your dog doesn't over-do eating the pears. It can cause diearhea or an upset stomach."

Maybe I should give them pears more often?

Bones

I know this is Bender's blog, but I thought I should introduce Bones, his younger brother.

Bones' rescue story. Last October I was in my car going to return a movie. I got to the intersection at the end of our street and saw a dog and cat sitting in the middle of the intersection. I stopped the car and opened the door to check on them. The cat ran away but the puppy ran right over to me and hopped in the car. I drove back down the street to our house and got C. We got the puppy into the back yard and decided we would bring him in the house and feed him since he looked starved. This did not sit well with Bender. It took him 3-4 days to warm up to this new puppy while we searched for his owners. As I mentioned, the puppy was pretty starved and had a bad case of fleas. After a month we couldn't find any owner, so we decided since Bender had warmed up to him and he really was a sweet puppy that we would include him in our family. We named him Bones because he was so skinny and for "Bones" McCoy on Star Trek.

After 4 months he is healthy and happy. He's a goofy puppy, but I'm glad we added him to the family.

Outside!

Valentine's Day

Bender: An Introduction

I've decided to start a blog for my dog Bender. He's a 2 and 1/2 year old Pembroke Welsh Corgi. We adopted him when he was just over a year old. It was love at first lick.

We call him many names: The Duke, Bender Peabody-Snarflenubbins, Bender-Buddy, BooBoo Bear(kins), Sausage, Link, Nubbins, Nubbers, Dummy, Dum Dum...

He enjoys naps, raw hides, pulling the stuffing from toys, playing in the back yard, and pulling apart anything made of cardboard.

Bender is my first dog. I was bitten when I was younger and had a terrible fear of all dogs. This changed the day I met Bender. My other half was asked to baby-sit a corgi for a while while they tried to find him a home. I went to his office to pick the dog up. I got there, sat on the floor with him, he licked my face and sat in my lap. That's all it took. He melted my heart - love at first lick. Obviously we ended up keeping Bender, a decision I couldn't be happier about.

Hopefully with this blog I can share all his goofy little mannerisms and fun adventures.
